Holidaily (1) - Fast And Fearless Fingerless Mitts

I've had requests to continue the Holidaily* series again, so here is the first one, and it is a gift from me to you!

No, I'm not giving you a seashell, silly, I'm giving you my pattern for Fast and Fearless Fingerless Mitts!

These mitts work up quickly (the test knitters and I made each pair in four hours or less). They are made in K1P1 ribbing, which creates a wonderful stretchy fabric that sort of looks like stockinette, at least when it isn't stretched out. The pattern also incorporates two different types of increases as a design element. The test knitters and I made our mitts with Malabrigo, which is great to work with.

But wait! There's a fun bonus! When you create these mitts, if you look at the thumb-side, you will see that the thumb-gusset shaping creates a tulip motif. I don't know about you, but in the dead of winter I need some hope that spring will arrive, so I'm hoping that seeing tulips on each of my mitts will get me through those depressing snowy days in March (and up here in Maine....April).

Here are a few little details that might be helpful before you download the pattern: The pattern requires

• 80 yards of chunky weight yarn (100 yds if you make the dense version)
• Size 10 US double point needles (or size 9 if you make the dense version)
• Knowledge of Cable Cast On, KFB and M1 increases (specifically - M1 right and M1 left), and purl-through-the-back-loop.

Note: The purple mitts were made with Malabrigo Chunky in the Cuarzo colorway. The crazy green mitts were made with Malabrigo Worsted (held double throughout) in the Apple Green colorway.

Just in time! Would like to make them smaller for my 10-yr-old twins who hands are probably getting close to a xs womens and for my 7-yr-old son. I'm not the most experienced knitter and using homespun yarn but I'm guessing I'll use size 9 but how many stitches would you recommend casting on to make it smaller for younger kiddos? Thanks so much!
